With over four decades of dedicated service in global and community health, I bridge the gap between complex public health systems and the individuals they serve. My journey began in 1984 as a Rural Nutritionist with the Instituto Colombiano de Bienestar Familiar in Yolombó, Colombia, and evolved through pivotal humanitarian assignments across the globe. My international tenure includes roles with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the World Food Programme in Honduras; the United Nations Development Programme in Equatorial Guinea; the International Medical Corps in Angola; and both CARE International in Sudan and World Vision International in Somalia.

As a veteran practitioner, I specialize in cultural competence, health literacy, and the professionalization of community health work. My approach is rooted in a robust academic foundation—spanning nutrition, public health, and training development—and is enhanced by current, evidence-based training in integrative medicine. Navigating Chronic Stress, Validating the Biology of Trauma, and Reclaiming Your Well-Being Through Autogenic Training

Scientific evidence linking chronic stress to the development and progression of chronic diseases is robust, spanning decades of research across endocrinology, immunology, epidemiology, and neuroscience.

The primary mechanisms and evidence supporting the role of stress in chronic illness are outlined below:

1. Physiological Pathways (The Biological Mechanisms)

Chronic stress keeps the body's primary stress response systems—the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis and the Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS)—in a constant state of activation. This dysregulation leads to several disease-driving processes:

  • Systemic Low-Grade Inflammation: Prolonged exposure to stress hormones (such as cortisol and adrenaline) impairs the body's ability to regulate the inflammatory response. This leads to chronically elevated levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines (like IL-6 and TNF-alpha) and C-reactive protein (CRP), which are foundational drivers in cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and autoimmune conditions.

  • Oxidative Stress and Cellular Aging: Chronic stress accelerates the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), causing cellular damage.
